Study Finds Humboldt County Cliffs Retreat Faster Than Anywhere Else in California

A study released in August by researchers at UC San Diego's Scripps Institute of Oceanography found that Humboldt County's coastal cliffs are retreating faster than any other region in California. While the statewide average cliff-top retreat was about 1.5 inches per year from 2016 to 2023, Humboldt cliffs moved roughly six inches annually, with the Lost Coast Headlands losing more than 70 feet per year and the King Range segment retreating an average of 56 feet annually. Lead author University of Maryland associate professor Danghan Xie said the cause remains unclear but suggested higher rainfall, powerful tides, larger waves, and unique geology may contribute. The researchers compared lidar data collected in October 2023 with NOAA lidar data from 2016 across hundreds of miles of California coastline.

California K-12 Governance Overhaul Awaits Next Governor's Implementation

Researchers recommend the commissioner simplify goals, provide stricter oversight of struggling schools, and intervene directly when districts underperform. Local superintendents in Humboldt and El Dorado counties expressed cautious optimism that a streamlined system could reduce bureaucratic burdens on educators.

New Humboldt County Library Director Plans Community Input Process Starting December

Jeff Scott, appointed by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors as Director of Library Services, is about a month into leading the county's public library system, which operates on roughly $6 million annually with 32 full-time staff serving the Eureka main branch, 10 branches and a Bookmobile. Scott said he will begin drafting a strategic plan for the next three to five years starting roughly in December, incorporating community meetings and surveys to guide the system through summer. He emphasized face-to-face interaction with library staff as central to the system's mission. Scott previously served as Director of Library Services for Washoe County, Nevada, where he resigned in 2025 under pressure from board members and anti-LGBTQ activists, according to KUNR Public Radio.
