The National Weather Service issued a notice advising residents in low-lying coastal areas to monitor tides due to El Niño and Kelvin wave effects. Predicted high tides will rise from approximately 7.5 feet on October 25 to a peak of 8.06 feet on October 28, returning to normal levels by October 30. While this level is below the major flooding threshold of 9.5 feet, it exceeds King Salmon's minor flooding trigger of 8.8 feet. Residents are urged to avoid driving through ocean water due to potential salt damage and to prepare for higher water levels.

Roughly 70 members of SEIU Local 1000 rallied Wednesday morning along Highway 101 at 4th and K streets in Eureka as part of a one-day statewide strike protesting labor practices by the Newsom administration. The union, representing approximately 100,000 public workers including analysts, nurses, custodians, and office staff, alleges bad-faith bargaining after its contract expired June 30. The Public Employment Relations Board recently concluded that CalHR "refused to meet and confer in good faith," according to the union. Strikers seek a 20% pay raise over three years, telework policy changes, and reduced healthcare costs. State workers warned of impacts to EDD call centers and DMV lines in Humboldt County, though essential workers continued working.

Eureka City Councilmember Leslie Castellano proposed a feasibility study to reduce Highway 101 lanes on Fourth and Fifth streets from three to two to improve pedestrian safety. The proposal followed a recent meeting where Caltrans officials reportedly rejected the idea due to concerns about traffic diversion onto Sixth and Seventh streets. Other councilmembers suggested staff gather more information or invite Caltrans for further discussion rather than immediately commissioning a study. The council also reviewed utility assistance programs and discussed potential ordinances regarding surveillance pricing.

A former waitress publicly alleged physical assault during the incident, and three employees confirmed Anaya drank heavily on the job; Anaya denied the closure was connected to the arrest, attributing her condition to recent family deaths.
