Hoopa Man Arrested Oct. 11 for Starting Fire; Sought in Additional East County Fires

On October 11, 2026, at approximately 6:33 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies arrested 52-year-old Hoopa resident Aaron James Pole on suspicion of causing a fire (P.C. 452(c)) in the 1800 block of State Highway 96 in Hoopa, after he was reportedly seen attempting to accelerate an active fire while wearing wildland-firefighter-style clothing. Additional fires were reported that afternoon along State Highway 169 at Pecwan Creek in Weitchpec and on Big Hill Road and Marshall Lane in Hoopa; deputies have not established probable cause to charge Pole for those incidents but are treating him as a person of interest. Pole was driving a maroon Ford F-350 van, and the Sheriff's Office is seeking eyewitnesses who may have seen it near the fire scenes. In July and August 2026, Pole was also a suspect or arrestee in separate fires on Tish Tang Road and Pine Creek Road in Hoopa, with both prior cases forwarded to the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office.

Arcata Voters Decide Whether to Renew Measure G Sales Tax in Perpetuity This Election

Arcata's only ballot measure this election cycle asks voters to renew a 0.75% general-purpose sales tax (Measure G) indefinitely, replacing its current March 2029 sunset date with no expiration and requiring only a simple majority to pass. Originally approved in 2008 with 63% of the vote, the tax has generated $39 million over roughly 17 years—split between road improvements ($21 million) and public safety ($17.5 million, including hiring four police officers)—and helped leverage an estimated $35 million in grant funding. City officials warn that without renewal, street paving could decrease sharply, as Measure G funds $2.8 million of the city's $7 million 2026 street budget. A February poll commissioned by Arcata found 31% would definitely vote yes and about 20% would oppose the tax if used to hire more police officers; no opposing arguments were filed with the county elections office.

Eureka Planning Commission Reviews New Psychiatric Facility at 5th and J; Aurora Hall Conversion

The Eureka Planning Commission is reviewing a proposed two-story, 21,728-square-foot replacement for Humboldt County's Sepervirens inpatient psychiatric facility, to be built at the corner of 5th and J Streets downtown. The new facility would include a 16-bed inpatient unit and a four-bed crisis stabilization unit serving adolescents and adults, replacing the current 1901-era building at 720 Wood Street; construction is expected to finish around October 2027. City planning staff recommend the project substantially conforms with Eureka's 2040 General Plan, though they note partial inconsistencies in development intensity, ground-floor transparency, and lack of bicycle parking or renewable-energy systems. The commission's vote is advisory and non-binding; the county has not yet completed its CEQA environmental review. Also on the agenda: a proposal to convert the former church at 1427 California Street into "Aurora Hall," a community gathering and event space.
