Bill Would Require Early Voting in Hudson County School, Fire, May Elections

Senate Bill 4796, introduced Oct. 8, 2026 by Sen. Brian P. Stack (D-33), would mandate early in-person voting for all elections—including school board, fire district, and May municipal races—in New Jersey counties with at least 15,000 residents per square mile. Hudson County is the only county meeting that threshold, with 15,691.5 people per square mile in the 2020 Census. The bill has been referred to the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee with no committee action yet, and a fiscal note from the Office of Legislative Services is pending. If enacted, the law would take effect on Jan. 1 following the governor's signature.

Federal Judge Grants 14-Day Stay Keeping Jersey City Cannabis Dispensary Open During Licensing Suit

U.S. District Court Judge Zahid Quraishi granted a 14-day temporary stay late Friday allowing The Cannabis Place, a minority- and veteran-owned dispensary in Jersey City, to remain open while its federal lawsuit against the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission proceeds. The stay came after the Jersey City Council delayed a vote on renewing the dispensary's cannabis license on Wednesday, just before the license was set to expire Friday. The lawsuit alleges that mandatory Labor Peace Agreement requirements under the CREAMM Act conflict with the National Labor Relations Act and the Commerce Clause. A case management teleconference is scheduled for the following day.

Hoboken Council Repeals Waterfront Amplified Sound Permit Ordinance

The Hoboken City Council repealed its Outdoor Amplified Sound Permits ordinance for the Sinatra Drive waterfront district after discovering the measure was improperly classified as a noise ordinance, which falls under NJDEP jurisdiction rather than municipal authority. The $250 monthly permit and associated fines had been intended to address amplified noise complaints from late-night events at Pier 13, located at Shipyard Marina. Corporation Counsel Diana Jeffrey flagged constitutional concerns about targeting a single business and vagueness in enforcement standards. Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher (2nd Ward), who sponsored the original measure, said the city will work with NJDEP on a revised approach for spring and summer, while 5th Ward Councilman Phil Cohen urged more collaborative solutions with waterfront businesses.
