Former Horry County Dental Worker Sues Over Alleged Medicaid Billing Irregularities
Heiby Toone, a former employee of Little River Medical Center in Horry County, South Carolina, filed a lawsuit alleging she was terminated after reporting that patients were charged out-of-pocket for dental services their Medicaid records indicated were covered. The lawsuit states Toone emailed the dental practice's manager with her concerns in 2023 and received disciplinary counseling three weeks later, followed by written performance documentation on Jan. 30, 2024, before being fired on March 25, 2024. According to the suit, the dental practice manager acknowledged she was "still working to correct the Medicaid billing and insurance irregularities" Toone had reported. A message left with Little River Medical Center was not returned, and the allegations remain unverified.
