Jury Hears Opening Statements in Myrtle Beach Murder Trial
Sheridan Fogle, 56, appeared in a Conway courtroom Tuesday for opening statements in his murder trial for the death of Penni Whiteside, 51, whose remains were found June 12, 2024, buried in a wooden chest behind a downtown Myrtle Beach apartment complex at 607 1st Ave. South. Prosecutors told the jury Fogle intentionally strangled Whiteside after she was reported missing in spring 2022; defense attorney Elizabeth Tilley argued self-defense, describing the couple's relationship as 'toxic.' The two had lived together since 2016 and broken up in fall 2021. Fogle was arrested Aug. 29, 2024, in Orangeburg after telling police he strangled Whiteside.
