Humboldt County Man Sentenced to 320 Days for False Imprisonment of Cannabis Farm Workers

Judge Steven Steward sentenced Georgi Antonov Tonev, 45, of Los Angeles, to 320 days in jail for felonious Grand Theft of Wages, False Imprisonment, Failure to Secure Worker's Compensation Insurance, and Unlawful Possession of Cannabis for Sale. The convictions stem from a scheme at Showers Pass Farm in rural Humboldt County, where three Spanish-speaking immigrant workers were held against their will from April 2025 onward without pay, adequate food, or safe drinking water. One victim, Javier Escamilla-Garcia, remained isolated for approximately five months before contacting the Mexican Consulate via Facebook Messenger in February 2026, prompting a helicopter rescue by the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department and Cal-Fire Search and Rescue. The District Attorney will seek over $120,000 in restitution, and Tonev received two years of felony probation with a suspended three-year-four-month prison term.

The freeze applies to facilities exceeding 15 megawatts of power consumption, while centers using 100 percent renewable energy and closed-loop water systems are exempt. Supervisors cited concerns about electricity rate increases from heavy demand and uncertainty around AI-driven expansion as motivations. In a separate unanimous vote, supervisors revised code enforcement so buyers of former cannabis cultivation sites won't be cited unless cultivation continues more than 30 days after taking ownership.
