Fresno County Approves Friant Ranch Despite Unresolved Water Supply Issues

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors approved the environmental review for the Friant Ranch development on Tuesday, despite acknowledging that the project's water supply analysis relied on outdated data. County counsel confirmed that Millerton Lake can only store backup water for one year, insufficient to cover a repeat of the 2014-2015 drought. Supervisor Brian Pacheco voted against related zoning changes but joined the majority in certifying the review after learning the developer would cover legal defense costs. Critics argue the approval ignores new information regarding changed conditions and potential public health risks.

San Joaquin River Salmon Restoration Reaches Milestone, Faces Funding Gaps

The San Joaquin River Restoration Program reached a milestone in summer 2025 when 448 adult spring-run Chinook salmon returned to the river, the highest count since juveniles were first reintroduced in 2014. A $44 million hatchery opened in May 2025 in Friant produces up to 1 million juvenile salmon annually for release at the Merced River confluence near Newman. Construction of a $93 million bypass channel around Sack Dam and the Arroyo Canal east of Dos Palos began in 2025, while a Mendota Pool bypass project expected to cost up to $700 million is planned for 2028. Program managers estimate full river navigability for salmon by 2035, well past the timeline set by the 2006 legal settlement that created the program.

Gonzalez pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony assault, causing injury to an elder adult, vandalism, and misdemeanor battery, and was released on $37,000 bail to return to Texas. CalMatters Investigation Finds DMV Let Unsafe Truck Drivers Keep Driving

A CalMatters investigation reveals that the California Department of Motor Vehicles frequently fails to suspend commercial driver's licenses after fatal crashes or serious violations. The report highlights cases where drivers with histories of dangerous behavior, including vehicular manslaughter charges, retained valid licenses for years due to bureaucratic delays and reliance on court notifications. In one instance, a driver killed two people in separate incidents because the DMV did not act on the first crash before the second occurred. The agency stated it has recently updated its processes and took action against several drivers after being contacted by reporters.
