Fresno County officials will not privatize library operations after Library Systems and Services, the sole nationwide provider invited to submit a proposal, stopped communicating with county staff, according to a memo released Monday by County Administrative Officer Paul Nerland. The memo recommends no additional action by the Board of Supervisors, effectively ending this round of discussions initiated by Supervisor Garry Bredefeld. SEIU Local 521 members and residents spoke at Tuesday's board meeting at the Hall of Records urging continued opposition to privatization. The county library system is funded largely by Measure B, a countywide sales tax up for renewal in 2028, and Friends of the Library said they are exploring adding language to ensure funds remain restricted to county-operated libraries.

Two people suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds around 12:17 a.m. Sunday during Fresno's annual Halloween-themed Zombie Crawl, when nine shots were fired outside the MIA nightclub at the Linden Avenue intersection on Olive Avenue in the Tower District. Police Chief Mindy Casto announced Monday the arrest of a 16-year-old male suspect taken into custody after an hourlong standoff at his home in Fowler, with gang ties under investigation as a possible motive. Councilmember Miguel Arias proposed a temporary shutdown of nightlife operations, drawing sharp opposition from business owners and MIA club representatives who instead called for more police presence. The city plans to add officers and surveillance cameras, consolidate street food vendors to one location at Van Ness and Fulton, and hold a community meeting Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Tower Theatre to discuss safety changes.

SEIU Local 1000, representing about 100,000 California state workers, failed to reach a last-minute deal with the California Department of Human Resources before its planned one-day strike on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The union initially sought a 20% wage increase over three years and more flexible telework options amid stalled negotiations that began in late April after the contract expired at the end of June. Strike lines will be held at locations across California, including five in Sacramento and one in Fresno starting at 7 a.m. Workers will gather at CalHR headquarters, 1810 16th Street in Sacramento, for a strike line, guest speakers, and a march to the Capitol Annex Swing Space, with events running from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and sign-in beginning at 6:30 a.m.

A CalMatters investigation examining court filings and DMV records for more than 130 commercial licensees charged with vehicular manslaughter from 2019 to early 2024 found nearly half still held valid Class A or B licenses as of late May. The report centers on Baljit Singh, who killed a motorcyclist in Kern County in July 2021 and then killed Jenny Chow outside Fresno in June 2022, with the DMV aware of the first crash but not suspending his license until 2024. State law empowers the DMV to investigate fatal collisions and suspend licenses without a conviction, but records show the agency routinely does nothing or takes years to act. About 4,000 people died in large-truck crashes in California from 2015 through 2024. After CalMatters submitted questions about specific drivers, the DMV took action against a dozen of them.

California removed 47,229 acres of wine-grape vineyards between Aug. 1, 2025, and Aug. 1, 2026—an 8% decline leaving 439,115 total acres—according to a mapping report from the California Association of Winegrape Growers and Land IQ. Last year's data showed San Joaquin County, home to Lodi, and Fresno experienced the highest acreage losses by far statewide. The wine and grape industries have faced bankruptcies, layoffs, and downsizing amid oversaturated markets, reduced consumer demand, and the loss of most wine exports to Canada. USDA data shows wineries crushed 2.62 million tons of grapes in California in 2025, down over 8% from 2024, with average grape prices also declining.

Following Rite Aid's bankruptcy closure of 17 San Joaquin Valley stores and at least seven CVS and Walgreens closures in Fresno, vacant pharmacy buildings are attracting new tenants including medical clinics, dollar stores, gyms, multicultural markets, and grocery outlets. Real estate professionals say the 10,000-to-16,000-square-foot spaces are difficult to fill because they are too large for restaurants and too small for big-box retail. Specific planned uses include a general market with butcher and kitchen at Olive and Blackstone avenues, a gym called Fitsi at Shaw and West avenues, and affordable housing by the Fresno Housing Authority at the former CVS on Fulton and Tuolumne.

A trend of converting vacant fast food locations into Mexican restaurants is gaining momentum across Fresno, driven by strong demand for Latino cuisine in a city where more than half of the 555,000-plus residents identify as Hispanic or Latino. Recent openings include Tacos la Villa at 1052 East Shaw Ave. (formerly Carl's Jr.), Aliberto's Jr. at 1140 C St. downtown (formerly Wendy's), and Victoria's Mexican Food at 4145 E Jensen Ave. (formerly KFC). Commercial real estate professionals say second-generation restaurant spaces offer significant savings in equipment, permits, and time compared to buildouts from scratch. Not all new Mexican restaurants use former fast food sites; Tacos el Franc is opening at 110 E Shaw Ave., previously home to Heroes Comics.
