Fresno County Supervisors Vote Tuesday on Friant Ranch Despite Water Supply Concerns

Fresno County supervisors are scheduled to vote Tuesday on a billion-dollar new town proposal called Friant Ranch, located just south of the community of Friant, aiming to grow to roughly 7,000 residents. The project's water plan relies on storing multiple years' supply in Millerton Lake, but the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation states that rescheduled Class 1 water cannot be carried over through consecutive water years, contradicting the county's assumption. A Fresnoland investigation found the county never formally analyzed the 2016 storage scheme and instead relied on an informal 2022 memo from the developer's own consultant. The county's planning department has a documented history of approving foothill subdivisions whose water systems later failed, including at Mirabella and Shaver Springs. Supervisor Nathan Magsig declined to say whether he would approve the subdivision given the unresolved water questions.

Three Fresno County Residents Among 28 Charged With Voter Fraud Ahead of Midterms

On Monday, October 19, 2026, three Fresno County residents—Maricela Nazarín González of Clovis, Rony de Jesús Sicaja of Fresno, and Camino Giles Jiménez of Kerman—were among 28 legal permanent residents charged with voting as noncitizens in federal elections. The arrests are part of a Trump Administration operation targeting a list of 20,000 registered voters believed to be noncitizens, ahead of next month's midterm elections. All six Central Valley defendants face misdemeanor charges punishable by up to one year in federal prison. The Fresno County Elections Department said it had not been contacted by federal prosecutors and noted that citizenship status is checked during voter registration. A federal court hearing in Oakland challenges the operations, with voting-rights attorneys calling them an attempt to intimidate voters before Election Day.

CalMatters Investigation Finds California DMV Let Dangerous Truck Drivers Keep Licenses After Fatal Crashes

A CalMatters investigation found that California's Department of Motor Vehicles routinely fails to suspend commercial truck drivers' licenses after fatal accidents, allowing them to continue operating large vehicles. In one case, driver Baljit Singh killed a 26-year-old motorcyclist in Kern County in July 2021 but was permitted to keep driving until he struck and killed Jenny Chow near Fresno in June 2022 while traveling at approximately 65 mph. Of more than 130 commercial license holders charged with vehicular manslaughter between 2019 and early 2024, nearly half still held valid Class A or B licenses as of late May. Approximately 4,000 people died in large-truck accidents in California between 2015 and 2024. The DMV stated it depends on courts to notify the agency when a conviction involves a commercial vehicle.

Fresno City Council Votes Thursday on Water, Sewer Rate Changes; Public Hearing Dec. 3

The Fresno City Council is scheduled to vote Thursday on a five-year plan that would raise water rates for the first time in nearly a decade and adjust sewer rates for the first time in 16 years, adding an estimated $1.77 per month to a typical resident's water bill while decreasing sewer charges by $0.95. Mayor Jerry Dyer says the increases are necessary to address aging pipes and rising operational costs, stating they are unrelated to the Southeast Development Area (SEDA) project. Councilmember Miguel Arias claims the rate structure is designed to generate surplus revenue for future SEDA bonding, calling it "code for SEDA," and has asked to table the consent-agenda item pending further public discussion. City documents list funded projects including water main renewals, new wells, and operating reserve contributions. A public hearing on the proposed rates is set for Dec. 3.

Former Police Chief, Retired Fire Captain Run for Clovis Council District 4 on Nov. 3

Two candidates—former Clovis police chief Basgall and retired fire captain Wilson—are competing in the Nov. 3 election for Clovis City Council District 4, covering northeast Clovis north of Bullard Avenue and east of Sunnyside Avenue through Harlan Ranch along Highway 168. Basgall, who led the department for six years before retiring in December 2019, highlighted his experience navigating the Great Recession staffing crisis and championing Measure Y, which raised roughly $30 million in its first year to fund police hiring. He identified a $50 million to $100 million water treatment plant as the major infrastructure challenge for northeast growth expected within a decade, while opposing new taxes and suggesting Mello-Roos districts or developer contributions to fund it. The article's profile of Wilson, who has attended Clovis City Council meetings since the early 1990s, is cut short before his policy positions are detailed.
