Fresno-Area Father, 49 Years in US, Deported After Oct. 1 ICE Detention

Luis Arreguin, 54, a skilled laborer who lived near Fresno since age 5, was detained by federal immigration agents on Oct. 1 while driving to work and deported to Mexico within 15 days. He was among approximately 130 people taken into custody during the opening days of an immigration enforcement surge in the San Joaquin Valley, later expanded statewide as "Operation Safe California." Arreguin was held at ICE offices in Fresno and Bakersfield, then transferred to Camp East Montana near El Paso before being placed on a flight carrying roughly 300 detainees to Tapachula, southern Mexico. He made his way north by bus to Mexicali, Baja California, where his daughter rented him a motel room. His wife and four children remain in the Fresno area; his wife is packing up their home because the family cannot afford rent without his income. Arreguin said he has no recent criminal history and is working to find legal representation to challenge his removal.

ICE Releasing Out-of-State Detainees in Fresno, Bakersfield; Congress Demands Answers by Oct. 30

Elected officials and immigrant rights advocates say ICE has been releasing detainees from at least 29 states at processing centers in downtown Fresno and Bakersfield, leaving some stranded hundreds of miles from home without money or belongings. Valley Watch Network reports helping immigrants from 29 states return home since last year, with releases sometimes occurring late at night and phones uncharged. Congressional representatives sent a letter to acting ICE Director David Venturella demanding answers by Oct. 30 about an apparent arrest surge that began in Central California on Oct. 5. Santa Maria school officials reported last week that agents detained a student with special needs walking to school; the 20-year-old U.S. citizen was released but sustained injuries.

California Election Officials Reject Federal Voter-Segregation Demands

Multiple California counties received federal letters last Friday demanding they segregate ballots from a list of approximately 20,000 people identified as likely noncitizen voters, with threats of criminal charges for officials who tabulate those ballots. Butte County Clerk-Recorder Keaton Denlay found that 32 of the 47 names on his county's list were not on active voter rolls and seven could not be matched due to insufficient information; he declined further action. Fresno, San Benito, and Orange County registrars also received letters and questioned the lists' accuracy or legibility, with several refusing to deviate from state law. A federal judge appeared skeptical of the Trump administration's legal arguments in a Tuesday hearing, while the DOJ maintained it stands by the list's reliability.

Fresno City Council Candidate Cleared of DUI Accusation Ahead of Election

Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto announced Tuesday that City Council candidate Naindeep Singh's blood test came back negative for drugs, clearing him following a Saturday-night DUI arrest. Singh was stopped at 11:54 p.m. over expired tags; the arresting officer reported he failed six of eight indicator tests and exhibited horizontal gaze nystagmus. Casto apologized to Singh but said the officer had probable cause and stood by the arrest, noting Singh brought his registration up to date on Oct. 26.
