ICE Releases Detainees from 29 States at Fresno, Bakersfield Centers

ICE has been releasing detainees from at least 29 states at processing centers in downtown Fresno and Bakersfield, leaving some stranded hundreds of miles from home without money or belongings, according to elected officials and the Valley Watch Network. Congressional representatives sent a letter to acting ICE Director David Venturella demanding answers by Oct. 30 regarding an apparent arrest surge in Central California that began Oct. 5. Santa Maria school officials reported agents detained a 20-year-old U.S. citizen student with special needs walking to school; the student was released but sustained injuries. DHS denied using racial profiling tactics but declined to provide operational details, citing security concerns. Valley Watch Network has assisted immigrants from 29 states in returning home after releases at the Bakersfield office.

Fresno Police Chief Apologizes to Council Candidate After Negative Drug Test

Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto issued a public apology Tuesday to District 1 council candidate Naindeep Singh after laboratory results confirmed no drugs in his system following his arrest late Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence. The chief had earlier held a news conference emphasizing her officer acted correctly when Singh failed six of eight field sobriety indicator tests, before receiving verbal advisement from the lab that results were negative. Singh, who also serves as a Central Unified board member and executive director of the nonprofit Jakara Movement, had shared independent toxicology results Monday night showing no drugs in his system. Singh planned to hold his own news conference later Tuesday to address the chief's update.

Fresno Unified Candidates Weigh In on Potential School Closures

Fresno Unified School District, California's third-largest, has lost roughly 4,000 students over the past decade and expects similar losses ahead, prompting board discussions of school closures, boundary changes, and staffing cuts after eliminating 450 positions last year. Fresnoland surveyed ten Board of Education candidates; responses ranged from outright opposition to closures (Miguel Arias, Genoveva Islas) to conditional openness with rigorous analysis (Daren Miller, Riley Talford). Four of the district's ten lowest-enrollment elementary schools are in the Edison region—Lowell, Kirk, Jefferson, and Susan B. Anthony Elementary—each under 400 students. Three candidates (Bellard, Davis, Steed) did not respond to interview requests.

Fresno Food Bank Drivers Vote on Unionization Friday Morning, Oct. 30

Thirteen drivers at the Central California Food Bank in Fresno will vote Friday morning on whether to certify Teamsters Local 431 as their bargaining representative. In the lead-up, drivers and union organizers allege the food bank hired labor relations consultant Raul Calvo of Employer Services LLC to discourage unionization, including mandatory ride-alongs with a firm associate that organizers say may violate NLRB rules against captive-audience meetings. The food bank declined multiple requests for comment, and Calvo did not respond to inquiries. Teamsters president Justin Scott said the tactics "blur the lines" legally while drivers describe receiving raises of 30 to 60 cents over several years.

California Election Officials Question Federal Voter Lists

Election officials in multiple California counties reviewed federal lists of alleged noncitizen voters and found them inaccurate, illegible, or incomplete. Butte County Clerk-Recorder Keaton Denlay said 32 of 47 names on the list were not on active voter rolls, while San Benito County Registrar Francisco Diaz reported some listed individuals weren't registered to vote. Orange County received a letter naming 1,754 alleged noncitizens but was initially addressed to the wrong office. A federal judge appeared skeptical of the administration's legal arguments in court Tuesday, and state officials have refused to segregate ballots based on the lists.

Fresno Luxury Apartment Rents Spark Debate Over $3,750 Monthly Price

A $3,750-per-month two-bedroom apartment at The Hubert at Audubon Court, a new luxury building near Palm and Nees avenues in Fresno, drew online criticism for approaching Bay Area pricing. Citywide, the average two-bedroom rent in Fresno is $1,495 per month, according to Zillow. Robin Kane, managing director of Northmarq's Fresno office, said the high-end units cater to professionals relocating from higher-cost regions and noted construction expenses remain comparable statewide despite cheaper land. The building's remaining apartments range from $2,500 for a one-bedroom to $2,980 for a two-bedroom.
