Fort Lauderdale Increases Enforcement in Himmarshee District After Recent Violence

Fort Lauderdale police announced increased enforcement in the Himmarshee Entertainment District along Las Olas Boulevard near SW Second Avenue and SW Second Street, citing recent violence and underage drinking. Police Chief William Schultz detailed nighttime patrol surges, targeted operations, light towers, and metal barricades, while Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan reported more midnight-to-4 a.m. emergency calls involving 18-to-24-year-old "pass-outs." The crackdown follows incidents including a September shooting during a fight, a July parking garage shooting, and a December 2025 incident where five people were shot outside Dicey Riley's Irish Pub. Fort Lauderdale Ribbon-Cutting for $666M Water Plant Thursday at 10 a.m.

Fort Lauderdale will hold a grand opening ceremony Thursday at 10 a.m. for the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center, a $666 million facility at 3501 W. Prospect Road that replaces the 1950s-era Fiveash plant serving the region for 73 years. The new plant uses nanofiltration and ion exchange technology to produce up to 50 million gallons of clear drinking water daily, eliminating the yellow tint residents have long noticed. Built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, it serves customers in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Tamarac, Davie, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Sea Ranch Lakes and Port Everglades. City officials say some customers may notice temporary water color and taste changes through the end of 2026 during the phased transition; Fiveash will be decommissioned and converted to a storage and distribution center.

Fort Lauderdale to Regulate E-Bikes and Micromobility Devices by Year End

Fort Lauderdale commissioners are expected to approve new rules for e-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards, hoverboards, and Onewheels before the end of the year, with fines of $250 for a first offense and $500 for subsequent violations. Proposed requirements include a minimum rider age of 16, government-issued photo ID, and city registration with a visible decal. The devices would be prohibited from park pathways, recreational trails, athletic fields, plazas, and promenades, while Mayor Dean Trantalis advocated banning them from sidewalks and parks entirely. Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen pushed for a lower minimum age, citing younger riders already using the devices in neighborhoods. Commissioners are expected to continue discussion in coming months before final adoption.
