Rural Northern California Residents Say Prop 50 Redistricting Dilutes Their Political Voice
Following California's passage of Prop 50 to redraw congressional districts, residents in Modoc and Siskiyou counties say the new map dilutes their representation. Modoc County Supervisor Ned Coe plans to bypass incoming representative Jared Huffman by working with members from other districts, noting Marin County voters make up 30% of the district while Modoc County accounts for just 1%. Rancher Ryan Walker near Bogus Creek called the district shape gerrymandering but noted one potential benefit: the entire California portion of the Klamath River now falls within a single district. Valerie Coe cited gray wolf protections as an example of urban legislators overlooking rural economic concerns.
