Siskiyou County Ballot Returns Triple 2022 Pace; Registration Deadline Monday, Oct. 19

As of Oct. 16, Siskiyou County had received 2,307 of 27,640 mailed ballots (8.4%), roughly triple the 749 returns at the same point before the 2022 general election. Voters aged 65 and older account for 74 percent of local returns despite making up 41 percent of registered voters, while only 86 voters aged 18–34 have returned ballots. Registered Democrats are returning ballots at a 12.6 percent rate compared with 7.4 percent for Republicans, though early returns are an unreliable predictor of results. The regular voter registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 19; after that, conditional same-day registration remains available through Election Day on Nov. 3. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received within seven days to be counted.

Shasta River Chinook Count Stalls at 3,541; Scott River Quadruples

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's October 16 update reports net upstream passage of 3,541 adult Chinook at the Shasta River counting station through October 15, a gain of only 40 fish in seven days. The Shasta figure is now running below both the 2001–2025 mean and median for this date, while the Scott River count quadrupled to 40 Chinook and Shovel, Jenny, and Bogus creeks also posted increases. No coho salmon have been counted at any of the five stations. CDFW cautions these are not escapement figures and notes that whether the run is smaller or simply delayed will not be determined for several weeks.
