Commentary Questions Los Rios $1.1B Bond Ballot Language Ahead of Nov. 3 Vote

A CalMatters commentary republished by Noozhawk argues that the Los Rios Community College District's $1.1 billion Measure H bond on Tuesday, Nov. 3, misleadingly promises "no increase in tax rates" in its ballot summary. The author contends that issuing bonds triggers automatic property taxes of below $17 per $100,000 assessed valuation, generating $74.5 million annually until 2051 to repay investors. Former Los Rios trustee Robert Jones, who wrote the opposing ballot argument, questions the need for at least 32 new buildings when existing facilities remain underused due to remote learning. The article references a state appellate court ruling that upheld a finding against Hemet Unified School District for using similar bond-language framing.

Matsui, Vang Make Final Case in CA-7 Race Before Nov. 3 Election

U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui and Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang presented competing visions for California's 7th Congressional District in interviews with The OBSERVER during the final week before the Nov. 3 election. Matsui, 82, emphasized her two decades of congressional experience as essential to protecting residents from federal policy changes, while Vang, 41, argued that seniority has failed to improve conditions for Black and underserved communities in Sacramento County. The candidates differ on whether to abolish ICE or restructure it, with Vang supporting Medicare for All and Matsui focusing on defending existing Medicaid and Medicare programs. A Data for Progress poll of 651 likely voters conducted Aug. 18-21 found Vang at 32%, Matsui at 28%, and 40% undecided or skipping the race. The district was redrawn under Proposition 50, approved in November 2025, spanning parts of Sacramento, El Dorado and San Joaquin counties.

Six of the cases were filed in the U.S. Eastern District of California, the federal courthouse in Sacramento, all as misdemeanors carrying penalties of up to one year in prison or fines up to $100,000; Shah's court date is set for Nov. 6.
