Palatine Man Charged With Planning Mass Shooting at Aurora Hindu Temple; Security Increased

Illinois authorities arrested Alexandros Paporakis, 19, of Palatine on felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a rifle after he allegedly planned a mass shooting at the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple in Aurora. Police say his vehicle entered the temple parking lot around 12:25 p.m. Sunday before he was arrested near his home later that day, following a 911 call from Taco Bell co-workers who reported his threats. Detectives recovered an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a tactical vest, and a patch depicting Nazi symbolism during a search of his home. Aurora Mayor John Laesch said police are reaching out to other temples in the area, and the temple implemented increased armed security effective immediately. Paporakis' next court hearing is set for Oct. 30.

A 21-year-old woman told police she was sexually assault while not fully conscious in a locked basement bathroom at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house on University Avenue in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, according to a witness account and police report obtained by the Tribune. The incident occurred Saturday night after the woman, who attends Columbia College, consumed three cans of an unknown alcoholic beverage at the party. University of Chicago officials identified a person of interest Tuesday and banned him from campus, while Chicago police confirmed no one was in custody as of Wednesday evening. The AEPi fraternity issued a statement saying it was 'deeply disturbed' but claimed no members were involved or complicit; however, two sober monitors present in the basement allegedly took no action. The case drew heightened national attention amid ongoing controversy over a separate 2024 sexual assault allegation at Cornell University's Chi Phi fraternity.
