Judge Sets Nov. 5 Deadlines Before Memorial Circle Arch Construction Can Begin
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered that the National Capital Planning Commission, National Park Service, and Department of the Interior must notify her within one hour of any decision related to a proposed memorial arch at Washington, D.C.'s Memorial Circle. The ruling complicates the Trump administration's plan to begin construction as early as November 5, 2026, pending Planning Commission approval. Three Vietnam veterans and an architectural historian filed the lawsuit, while the District of Columbia and Virginia filed a separate suit opposing the project. The proposed arch would exceed 12 stories, include a bronze Lady Liberty statue with wings and torch, and require traffic rerouting on nearby roads.
