AC Transit Proposes 16% Bus Service Cut; November Ballot Decides Funding
The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit (AC Transit) board held a public hearing Oct. 14 on a contingency plan that would cut 16% of overall bus service if no long-term funding source is secured by December, with changes taking effect by June 2027. The plan could eliminate routes including lines 34 and 35 in San Leandro and the 97 from Union Landing to the Union City BART station, put up to 300 jobs at risk, and leave Chabot College night-class students without a ride home after 7 p.m. AC Transit faces an annual deficit of $53 million. Voters in five Bay Area counties will decide this November on a Regional Transit Measure sales tax that would generate approximately $1 billion per year for transit agencies.
