Ceres Council to Consider Emergency Resolution Oct. 26 After Water Well Failure

The City of Ceres announced plans to assist eight households in a nearby community after the River Road Water System’s only active groundwater well failed on October 16. The failure left residents near River and Mitchell roads without their primary source of potable water, prompting the distribution of bottled water and hauled-water deliveries. At its meeting on October 26, the Ceres City Council will consider a resolution proclaiming a local emergency to authorize an interim city manager to pursue an emergency connection to the municipal water system. This action follows a previous agreement approved in August 2024 to connect the independent River Road Mutual Water Company to Ceres’ municipal supply.

Stanislaus County Cuts 7 Public Defender Positions Effective Nov. 30

Stanislaus County supervisors approved deleting seven positions in the Public Defender's Office effective Nov. 30 after federal grant funding expired without renewal. Five roles—two upper-level social workers, a paralegal, a caseworker and a staff services analyst—were funded by a $2.15 million Justice Assistance Grant Program supporting early representation before arraignment. Two additional positions in post-conviction and appellate representation were supported by an expiring public defense pilot program grant. Public Defender Jennifer Jennison said the programs will continue but with reduced staffing, merging affected clients into the general caseload. The JAG-funded teams had conducted over 1,200 client assessments, resulting in 434 releases on their own recognizance.
