3.75 MWh Battery Installed at Buffalo Affordable Housing Complex
A 3.75 megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery system has been installed at the Peace Bridge Place affordable housing complex in Buffalo, New York, one of the largest such systems in a U.S. residential building. Manufacturer Viridi and developer Good Carbon Co. announced the project Tuesday, with partial funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA). The all-electric, geothermal-heated building uses the battery to store excess energy and power residents during grid strain or outages, lowering electricity costs for renters earning no more than 80% of area median income. Viridi spent six years and $10 million developing a fireproof container that passed Underwriters Laboratories safety standards in April, enabling indoor installation without additional fire suppression.
