Child Dies of Measles in Lewis County, NY; State's First Death in 30 Years

A child died of measles in Lewis County, upstate New York, marking the state's first measles-related death in 30 years, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday. Earlier in October, Hochul declared a measles disaster amid rising cases in rural areas and issued an executive order expanding who may administer measles vaccines to include paramedics, midwives, and nurses. New York has reported more than 100 measles cases this year. Nationally, the U.S. is experiencing its worst measles outbreak since 1991 with nearly 3,900 reported cases, while neighboring Pennsylvania has recorded over 1,000 cases, 198 hospitalizations, and five deaths.
