Sandy Hook Families Urge Supreme Court to Uphold AR-15 Bans
Relatives of victims killed in the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut filed amicus briefs on Wednesday urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold state and local bans on AR-15-style rifles. The filings relate to two cases challenging gun bans enacted in Connecticut in 2013 and Cook County, Illinois in 1993, with oral arguments scheduled for Dec. 2. More than 40 other individuals and groups also submitted briefs, most supporting the restrictions. Gun rights advocates argue the bans violate the Second Amendment and contend school security, not firearm type, is the relevant issue.
