Public Safety · El Dorado County
More than 69,000 PG&E customers across 23 Northern and Central California counties lost electricity beginning Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. as part of a public safety power shutoff ahead of elevated wildfire danger. El Dorado (9,264), Placer (5,567), and Amador (5,188) counties were hardest hit, with affected communities including Camino, Pollock Pines, Foresthill, Colfax, and Emigrant Gap. Red flag warnings remained in effect through Friday at 10 a.m., with wind gusts of 40–55 mph and humidity potentially dropping into single digits. PG&E planned additional shutoffs Thursday and Friday mornings, with estimated restoration for many foothill communities by Saturday morning or midday. More than 40 community resource centers offering device charging, Wi-Fi, water, and snacks were available across 25 counties.
Education · Amador County
The Amador County Unified School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on Wednesday, October 21 on a consolidation plan that would turn Amador High into a consolidated 10th–12th grade campus and Argonaut High into a 7th–9th grade junior high. The plan also repurposes Jackson Junior High for Adult Education programs and converts Ione Junior High into the new Ione Elementary through a three-year phased transition, ultimately closing the current Ione Elementary campus. Tensions escalated at the October 7 board meeting after ACUSD filed a public records request with the City of Ione regarding housing developments affecting enrollment, following no response to a September 8 letter. The Cities of Ione and Jackson have passed resolutions opposing consolidation, while more than 60 educators signed a letter in support. A final Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration environmental report will also be up for approval at the October 21 meeting.
