Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers, first elected in 2002, resigned due to severe illness effective October 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., according to a letter presented at an emergency meeting of the Board of Whitman County Commissioners on Friday afternoon. The commission unanimously appointed acting undersheriff Keith Cooper to fill the role temporarily. Myers had announced in January that he would seek re-election for a seventh consecutive term and was running unopposed, having received 95% of the vote in the primary. Prosecutor Denis Tracy confirmed Myers is hospitalized.

The Whitman County Auditor's Office is addressing a second ballot error affecting the general election, this time involving the Whitman County Rural Library District levy. Ballots sent to voters in Farmington, Garfield, Lamont and Malden initially omitted the library levy because the district's inclusion of those towns was never properly recorded. Auditor Sandy Jamison confirmed the error predates her tenure and went undetected because the library district has not run a levy in years. Special ballots have been sent to affected voters, who must vote with both ballots. Jamison is asking residents to drop their ballot into voting boxes around Whitman County until 8:00 on election night November 3rd. Voters in the City of Pullman are not included in this library levy.
