Iowa Water Quality and Cancer Rates Dominate Midterm Campaigns; $320M Infrastructure Commitment Made in May

Water quality and cancer rates have become central issues in Iowa's midterm campaigns, with the state recording the second-highest rate of newly diagnosed cancers nationally. Central Iowa Water Works ran nitrate removal treatment for a record 193 consecutive days earlier this year, with treated water hovering around 8-9 mg/L against a federal limit of 10 mg/L. In May, Gov. Kim Reynolds and state lawmakers committed an additional $320 million for water infrastructure, conservation incentives, and equipment updates at Central Iowa Water Works. University of Iowa research attributes most above-normal cancer rates to demographic factors like smoking and binge drinking, with environmental nitrate assessment ongoing. Candidates across parties debate whether agricultural runoff mandates are needed, while farmers resist regulations citing land-tenure and profit concerns.

Former Iowa Gymnastics Coach Sentenced to 90 Years for Recording Minors

Sean Gardner, 39, a former youth gymnastics coach at Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa, was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson to 90 years in prison—30 years on each of three federal child pornography production charges he pleaded guilty to. Gardner placed a hidden camera in a bathroom at a gymnastics studio in Purvis, Mississippi, between December 2017 and April 2018, recording at least 10 minors undressing or using the bathroom. Several former students from Chow's Gymnastics have alleged sexual abuse by Gardner in civil lawsuits, though he has not been criminally charged in connection with those Iowa allegations. Lawsuits remain pending against Gardner, USA Gymnastics, and Chow's Gymnastics.
