VUSD Approves $6 Million Sale of Former Avenue School for Affordable Housing

The Ventura Unified School District Board of Education voted 5-0 on October 13, 2026, to approve an option-for-sale agreement transferring the 7.44-acre former Avenue Elementary School property at 2647 North Ventura Avenue to Ventura Housing for $6 million. The site, closed in 1989 due to seismic safety noncompliance, will be developed into affordable housing for educators and the broader Ventura community. Sale proceeds are restricted under California law to one-time facility projects rather than ongoing operating costs. Any future housing development must still receive City of Ventura planning approval.
