Owner Promised Palace Hotel Structural Letter Within 10-14 Days of Oct. 7 Meeting
At the Oct. 7 Ukiah city council meeting, Tom Carter, current owner of the former Palace Hotel building, stated he would present a structural soundness letter from Ruff and Associates Inc. within 10-14 days. The letter-writer, author of a book on the building's history, provided extensive documentation showing the structure was declared structurally unsound and a public nuisance in September 2023 by the City's chief building official and Ukiah Valley Fire Authority. A May 2024 order directed then-owners Jitu and Paru Ishwar to stabilize or demolish the building due to imminent hazard from deteriorating brick walls. In late October 2024, ZFA Engineering reported the structure was dangerous as it exists and recommended an immediate shoring plan.
