Lindsay Teachers at Impasse with District; Mediation Set Nov. 16

The Lindsay Teachers Association declared an impasse with the Lindsay Unified School District in contract negotiations, with the Public Employment Relations Board confirming the declaration last week. The teachers' previous contract expired June 30, and the first mediation session is scheduled for November 16; LTA lead negotiator Joe Vagt said a potential strike could occur this spring, which would be the first in more than 20 years. The district proposed a 4 percent total increase (1.5 percent wages, 2.5 percent benefits) and reducing workdays from 188 to 185, while teachers requested a 4.75 percent raise. LTA claims teacher salary expenditures dropped by more than $650,000 over three years while administrative spending rose by nearly $1.1 million; the district disputes this characterization, stating the figures reflect staffing adjustments rather than individual salary cuts.
