Tacoma Speed Cameras Catch Nearly 400,000 Speeders; Only 100 Daily Citations Issued

New speed cameras at Norpoint Way and Marine View Drive in Northeast Tacoma photographed nearly 400,000 drivers exceeding the 40 mph limit between Sept. 14 and Oct. 11, with roughly 77% of approximately 515,000 vehicles passing through speeding. After a warning period ended Oct. 14, the city began mailing citations but limited them to 100 randomly selected vehicle owners per camera per day due to processing constraints from operator NovoaGlobal. The cameras were installed following a neighborhood petition citing hundreds of crashes in the area, and Tacoma plans to expand enforcement to South Sprague Avenue, Pacific Avenue, and Portland Avenue early next year. Average speeds dropped by about half a mph during the warning month, while more than 180 drivers exceeded 70 mph in the 40 mph zone.
