Students at Santa Maria and Lompoc high schools walked out on Friday in response to the October 21 detention of Erik Zepeda, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen and special needs student, near Santa Maria High School. According to witnesses, Zepeda was tackled and restrained by federal immigration agents before being released with injuries that later required surgery; ICE said he matched a description of their target and denied broken bones. Congressmember Salud Carbajal filed a request with DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin on October 29 calling for an investigation into Central Coast enforcement operations, citing reports of daily ICE activity throughout October. The nonprofit 805 UndocuFund reported at least 1,350 ICE arrests in Santa Barbara County from January 2025 through October 2026, with the majority occurring in Santa Maria (848) and Lompoc (316). ICE officers were also observed daily outside the Santa Barbara County Main Jail during Halloween weekend.

The Santa Barbara County Elections Office reported approximately 88,000 ballots returned by Monday, representing 35% of registered voters, with over 10,000 received on Monday alone. Polling places and ballot drop boxes remain open until 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, with vote-by-mail results expected around 8:15 p.m. and polling place results around 9 p.m. Voters are urged to cast ballots early due to the lengthy ballot and potential wait times at the polls. Ballots mailed on Election Day may not be postmarked in time to count due to USPS processing changes; approximately 2,300 late ballots were rejected in the June primary.

The U.S. Supreme Court issued an unsigned ruling Monday rejecting a Trump administration emergency petition seeking to set aside ballots of 20,000 alleged noncitizens in California's midterm elections. The filing came one day before Election Day and had already been rebuffed three times by lower federal courts. Santa Barbara County identified 180 names on the DOJ list; county elections chief Joe Holland declined to make a public statement, while DA John Savrnoch stated he had no intention of investigating citizenship claims. A DOJ letter demanded verification within 48 hours and threatened legal liability for non-compliance, which Judge David O. Carter cautioned could chill voter participation.
