The Santa Maria Police Department officially launched the first phase of an AI-powered dispatch system called Hyper AI on Wednesday, designed to handle non-emergency calls such as arson registry, sex registry, and some theft reports. As of Thursday, the system had received 208 calls, with 17 (about 8.3%) resolved by the AI agent. The technology automatically transfers calls to a live dispatcher when it detects in-progress crimes, weapons threats, or safety concerns, and offers support in 30 languages. Police officials say the system aims to ease workload during overnight shifts when only one or two dispatchers may be on duty. The Lompoc Police Department has used the same program for about eight months, reporting a 66% reduction in communications center workload.
