Isla Vista Beach Access Stairs Closed Ahead of El Niño; County Repair Assessment at $1.8M

Two beach access points in Isla Vista—Pescadero and Escondido—are closed, and all access stairways require immediate maintenance under the Coastal Act and county Coastal Plan standards. Santa Barbara County's repair assessment for Camino del Sur (damaged) and Escondido (closed) totals $1.8 million, while the county has spent $290,000 on a Stantec Consulting repair plan that remains undelivered. In January 2026, an aging drain line at Camino Majorca broke, causing cliff collapse next to a beach stairway and costing $391,000 in repairs; similar drain lines at three other access points remain unmaintained. County spending since 2023 has included $124,000 for chain-link fencing on Del Playa Drive parks and $6,000 annually for porta potties, while Supervisor Laura Capps's stated priorities include a bluff safety plan and a memorial in Walter Capps Park. Isla Vista residents and surfers face limited beach access and no designated coastal parking as El Niño swells approach.

Santa Barbara Elementary Principal Returns Oct. 9 After Election Controversy

Washington Elementary School Principal Arielle Curry returned to campus Oct. 9 after being placed on administrative leave Sept. 28 by the Santa Barbara Unified School District over a student council election controversy. According to Curry, she led post-vote deliberations that selected runner-up candidates for two positions instead of the students who received the most votes, including student body president—a role awarded to her own child. Curry acknowledged the process lacked transparency and fairness, apologized, and said she would work to improve future elections. The district expressed confidence in Curry's ability to lead reform efforts while continuing to serve the school community.
