SLO County Voters Have Until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3 to Cast Ballots

San Luis Obispo County voters can cast ballots for the Nov. 3 general election at drop boxes, two elections offices in SLO and Atascadero, or any of 59 polling sites open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. The clerk-recorder's office recommends mailing ballots at least seven days before Election Day because the nearest USPS hub is over 70 miles away in Goleta; after the June 2 primary, more than 3,300 county ballots went uncounted, with over 2,900 discarded for arriving too late. Voters may also use VoteMobile pop-up ballot collection events or track their mail-in ballots at WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov.

SLO County Clerk-Recorder Rejects DOJ Demand to Segregate Ballots

On Oct. 26, San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano publicly rejected a hand-delivered DOJ letter received Oct. 23 demanding confidential voter registration information for 63 individuals identified as "likely aliens" within 48 hours ahead of the midterm elections. Cano cited California Elections Code Sections 15105 and 15106, stating that existing legal procedures govern challenges to mail-in voters and that a list of alleged ineligible registrants does not authorize setting aside ballots. The DOJ demand was part of "Operation Protect the Vote," coordinated among all four California-based U.S. Attorney's Offices. The SLO County Counsel's Office is reviewing the correspondence to draft a formal response.

USPS Carriers Work Extended Hours for Ballot Delivery During Midterm Election

The United States Postal Service is operating under "extraordinary measures" during the midterm election, with carriers working longer hours to accelerate ballot mail delivery. A collection box in front of San Luis Obispo City Hall was found overflowing; after a KSBY reporter notified USPS, a carrier was dispatched and identified an obstruction. County Clerk-Recorders recommend voters take ballots directly to the election center or a county ballot drop box rather than relying solely on mail pickup. USPS advises residents who encounter a full collection box well before the posted collection time to call 1-800-ASK-USPS.

SLO County Library Vans Begin Regular Park Stops

As of Oct. 21, San Luis Obispo County Public Libraries' Branch Out program added regular mobile library van stops at Templeton Park (550 Crocker St.) and DeVaul Park (1651 Spooner Drive) in SLO city. The vans stop at Templeton Park every Saturday during the farmers market from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and at DeVaul Park on the second and third Saturdays of each month from 3 to 4 p.m. County officials said the additions aim to reach residents who lack nearby library access or struggle to find time for visits; a survey of more than 600 residents found roughly 40 percent cited being too busy as a major barrier. The county purchased its three outreach vans in 2022 with a California State Library grant and plans to expand stops into South County.
