More than 100 Cal Poly students attended a Friday morning listening session with university leadership about a proposed mixed-use development converting approximately 18 acres of farmland along Highland Drive into student housing, retail, and potentially a hotel. President Armstrong announced the university is exploring options to preserve a lemon grove originally slated for removal, reducing the development footprint from roughly 30 acres to 18. Students raised concerns about loss of agricultural land, environmental impacts, and effects on Cal Poly's Learn by Doing philosophy, while others supported the project for addressing campus housing and grocery access needs. A decision on whether the West Campus project moves forward is expected in November.

Common murres have been washing up in record numbers along the Central Coast, with Pacific Wildlife Care staff in Morro Bay admitting more than 800 birds between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15 for rehabilitation, including 165 from Oct. 9-12 alone. The nonprofit attributes the mass starvation event to El Niño-driven warm ocean temperatures pushing prey fish deeper, compounded by chicks leaving breeding grounds and adults molting into flightlessness during this period. Pacific Wildlife Care has re-released two groups of rehabilitated murres back into the ocean. Residents who find live murres on beaches are urged to call the wildlife hotline at (805) 543-9453; California's Department of Fish and Wildlife handles carcasses, with its Wildlife Health Lab still processing submitted birds and expecting updated mortality reports within a week.
