Rep. Levin Pushes Bill to Remove Nuclear Waste from San Onofre Coast

Rep. Mike Levin (D-San Diego/Orange County) is advancing the Spent Fuel Prioritization Act, co-authored by Reps. Darrell Issa and Young Kim, to accelerate removal of spent nuclear fuel stored on the beach at the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in northern San Diego County. The bill would prioritize sites with high seismic hazards, large populations, and national security risk for waste removal, and awaits consideration in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Levin also proposed creating Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses in willing communities in Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Idaho to recycle and store spent fuel in exchange for economic development. San Onofre ceased operating in 2013 after a steam generator failure; decommissioning began in 2020.

Owners potentially subject to the tax include those of the Chargers, Warriors, Padres, Sharks, Ducks, and incoming Lakers owner Bob Iger, while several out-of-state owners may be unaffected. Sports agent Leigh Steinberg warned the tax could raise ticket prices, while University of Missouri law professor David Gamage argued consumers would suffer more from healthcare funding cuts than from higher game-day costs.
