Trump Administration Sues California, LA County Over Alleged Non-Citizen Voter Registrations Ahead of Nov. 3 Election

The Trump administration filed a lawsuit Thursday against California and Los Angeles County seeking to prevent the counting of ballots from potentially 20,000 registered voters alleged to be non-citizens, just 19 days before the Nov. 3 general election. Federal prosecutors gave LA County Registrar Dean Logan and Secretary of State Shirley Weber 48 hours to verify citizenship on a USB drive list or sequester those ballots; Logan declined to review the file citing an insecure format. Grand jury subpoenas also targeted election officials in Orange County (Sept. 10, regarding ~18 voters) and San Diego County. Governor Newsom called the suit an attempt to suppress votes, noting the National Voter Registration Act bars purging voter rolls within 90 days of an election.

Kelvin Wave Raises Sea Levels Along California Coast; Next Pulse Expected Late October

A Kelvin wave driven by El Niño is raising sea levels along the California coast, with tide measurements up to 17 inches above normal in La Jolla and beaches entirely covered in Santa Cruz. Michael Beck, director of the Center for Coastal Climate Resilience at UC Santa Cruz, warns the elevated water increases flooding and erosion risk through winter, particularly if storms coincide with high tides during Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks. Roads were inundated in parts of Marin County north of San Francisco. Another Kelvin wave is expected to reach the California coast later this month, and researchers anticipate five to six such waves over the life of the El Niño event into winter.
