Federal Authorities Charge 28 Legal Residents in California Voter Fraud Crackdown

Federal authorities on Monday Oct. 20 charged more than two dozen legal permanent residents across California for alleged voter fraud and lying on immigration forms, with most having applied for U.S. citizenship. Arrests included José Antonio Bañuelos-Díaz outside his Los Angeles home and Pamele Arbues Line following a naturalization interview in San Diego. The Justice Department also sued California over its refusal to verify the citizenship status of roughly 20,000 registered voters it identified as potential noncitizens. Defendants face up to five years for voting-related charges and up to a decade for lying on naturalization applications, with possible deportation consequences. Government data shows naturalization approvals dropped to 58,000 between April and June 2026, less than a quarter of the same period in 2025.

San Diego CPA Sentenced to 18 Months for $1.5M Tax Fraud Scheme

Oladapo Olagbemi, 72, manager of the San Diego-based firm D.A.O. Accounting, Consulting, and Taxation, was sentenced in federal court Friday to 18 months in prison for preparing fraudulent tax returns that caused $1.5 million in losses to the federal government. He pleaded guilty in June to four counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns covering tax years 2019 through 2023, during which he fabricated $5 million in improper deductions including phony business expenses, charitable contributions, and energy credits. Federal prosecutors noted Olagbemi continued filing false returns even after an investigation by the California Board of Accountancy, interviews with IRS agents, a federal search of his office, and his guilty plea. U.S. District Judge Ruth Bermudez Montenegro said Olagbemi 'betrayed the trust of his clients' during sentencing.
