New York City's Parks Department issued 223,860 permitted reservations on public athletic fields in 2025, a 48% increase over daily permit levels from a decade ago, according to data analyzed by The City Reporter and The Pudding. Nearly 1,850 organizations now hold permits, roughly 310 more than in 2015, with youth sports accounting for about 75% of reservations since the pandemic. Only 5% of the city's approximately 5,850 active athletic facilities have lighting, limiting evening access as daylight hours shorten in fall and winter. The Mamdani administration piloted overnight field access at one location per borough over summer, which Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura called a success, while acknowledging the long-term need for more fields and lights.

Twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, and Tal Alexander, 40, faced sentencing Tuesday in New York federal court following their March conviction for sex trafficking. Prosecutors sought life sentences while defense attorneys requested the minimum of 15 years; at least 70 women were identified as victims of alleged drugging and sexual assault dating to as early as 2001-2002. The brothers, once prominent luxury real estate agents at Douglas Elliman before founding their own firm, were arrested in 2024 and held without bail. U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni indicated the brothers should not be incarcerated together.
