A Monday fire at the Patterson Houses in the Bronx killed 11-year-old Zion Maine and critically injured four family members after a lithium-ion battery exploded while charging in the kitchen, blocking the exit. Since NYCHA's e-bike charging protocol took effect in 2024, battery fires inside authority properties have risen from 13 to 22 so far in 2026, totaling 53 incidents, yet only three tenancy terminations have been initiated for non-compliance. The charging rule is not included on annual apartment inspection forms or the "Five Alive" maintenance checks used when staff enter units. Citywide, e-bike battery fires reached 401 with six fatalities so far in 2026, up from 292 with one fatality last year, according to the Fire Department.

Queens Criminal Court has launched a new initiative requiring defendants held on Rikers Island awaiting mental health treatment to receive judicial check-ins every 30 days to reevaluate their competency. Administrative Judge Michelle Johnson unveiled the program at a stakeholder meeting with the Queens County Criminal Bar Association, noting it gives judges a mechanism to move cases forward when treatment restores a defendant's fitness before an upstate Office of Mental Health bed becomes available. The initiative expands a pilot previously run in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Legal Aid Society attorneys said the average wait for a psychiatric facility bed was 81 days in 2024, with some defendants waiting over six months.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Thursday, Oct. 29, that a gun buyback event held Saturday at Majority Baptist Church in Jamaica collected 176 firearms, including 10 assault weapons. The collection was the largest single-buyback haul of her administration and the second largest across all five boroughs this year. Katz joined NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Attorney General Letitia James, and Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez at One Police Plaza to report that more than 4,500 guns have been removed citywide in 2026, including 868 in Queens. Katz stated that Queens recorded the fewest shooting incidents ever for the first nine months of 2026, with shootings down 10% compared to the same period in 2025.

John Surico has been appointed as the first executive director of Friends of the QueensWay, a linear park project planned along an abandoned railway in central Queens that has been in development for more than 15 years. The first phase, called the Metropolitan Hub, is a 5-acre park with 0.7 miles of shared greenway north of Forest Park adjacent to the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School complex, funded with approximately $50 million from the city budget. However, $117 million in federal funding for the second phase was eliminated by the Trump administration, and future phases remain unfunded while the project competes with the QueensLink proposal to reactivate the Rockaway Beach train line. Queens Community Board 6 approved a resolution earlier this month supporting the first phase while expressing desire to keep the QueensLink option open.
