Mamdani Seeks $21 Billion Federal Funding for Sunnyside Yard Housing in Queens

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is asking the federal government for $21 billion to build a deck over Sunnyside Yard in Queens and construct approximately 12,000 affordable housing units. The request would cost roughly $1.75 million per unit before construction, compared to about $700,000 per affordable apartment under the Mamdani administration's own estimates. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards questioned the plan's feasibility and timing, pointing to at least 15 other projects in Queens and alternatives including Flushing Airport, Willets Point, and land near Aqueduct. Multiple city planning experts and real estate executives cited construction difficulties, historical failures of similar railyard platform projects, and the risk that pursuing Sunnyside Yard would divert funding from more achievable housing developments. The Mamdani administration did not respond to a request for comment on the cost estimates and project hurdles.

NYC Minimum Wage Freeze Takes Effect Jan. 1 Amid Rising Inflation

New York City's $17/hour minimum wage will not increase on Jan. 1 due to a technical suspension clause in the 2023 state law that ties annual raises to seasonally adjusted private employment data. The freeze comes as inflation pushed New York area prices up 4% over the past year and city Comptroller Mark Levine reported a decline of 38,000 private-sector jobs excluding health care over the same period. Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to propose legislative changes in January to require a steeper employment decline before triggering a suspension, but any approved change would not affect 2027. Economists note NYC's wage will fall behind Seattle ($22.14), Denver ($19.78), and Connecticut ($17.48) on Jan. 1. Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed a $30/hour minimum by 2030 during his campaign but has not proposed specific legislation, and Deputy Mayor Julie Su said it is uncertain whether the city can act independently.

City Council Passes Bills to Improve Voting Access for Rikers Island Detainees

The New York City Council passed two bills on Thursday requiring the Board of Elections and Department of Correction to report annually on voting activities at city jails and to establish procedures for curing ballot defects submitted by detainees. Sponsored by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Queens Councilmember Selvena Brooks-Powers, the legislation aims to address what advocates describe as an ineffective mail-in voting system affecting approximately 7,000 New Yorkers held at Rikers Island. Officials testified in April that only about 335 of roughly 6,000 eligible detainees cast absentee ballots in the last general election, and a 2025 return rate of about 47 percent compared to over 73 percent statewide. The Department of Correction raised operational concerns during hearings, stating it is not set up to administer elections and faces challenges from the fluid jail population.
