Tulare County Reports 26 ICE Transfers in 2025 at Truth Act Forum

Tulare County law enforcement transferred 26 people in custody to federal immigration officials in 2025, according to statistics presented Tuesday to the Board of Supervisors during the county's annual Truth Act forum. The Sheriff's Office recorded 17,489 bookings and received 404 ICE requests; 378 did not result in transfers, with 130 individuals already released and 45 held on serious criminal charges. Community speakers raised concerns about reported immigration enforcement activity at courthouses, including a July 24 incident at the Porterville courthouse, and urged broader accounting of enforcement's effects on immigrant families. Supervisors had no questions or comments after public comment closed.

Tulare County Supervisors Celebrate Two Legislative Wins, Warn of Future Battles

Tulare County supervisors received a briefing Tuesday from their legislative advocacy firm on the 2026 session outcomes, celebrating the signing of Senate Bill 1115 granting the board additional authority over public cemetery districts and Gov. Gavin Newsom's veto of Assembly Bill 2494, which would have altered demonstration forest management and funding. The county had opposed AB 2494 over concerns about forest management and wildfire risks. Representatives cautioned that a controversial forestry proposal and negotiations over wildfire cost recovery involving investor-owned utilities are likely to return in the next legislative session beginning Dec. 7. Supervisors also discussed Senate Bill 577, which limits local government liability by requiring at least 15 percent responsibility in specified joint-liability situations, and Proposition 43, which would require two-thirds voter approval for affected local revenue measures.

Porterville Mayor Greg Meister said the city has invested approximately $500,000 over two years in emergency generators to keep water and sewer infrastructure operating during prolonged power outages. Porterville relies on wells that pump groundwater into elevated storage tanks, which cannot function without electricity. Meister cited recent Pentagon directives for military bases to plan 90 days off-grid and Great Britain's stockpiling advisories as context for local preparedness. He urged every Porterville household to maintain at least a 30-day supply of nonperishable food, stored drinking water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and other essentials.
