A Monday fire at the Patterson Houses in the Bronx killed 11-year-old Zion Maine and critically injured four family members after a lithium-ion battery exploded while charging in the kitchen, blocking the exit. Since NYCHA's e-bike charging protocol took effect in 2024, battery fires inside authority properties have risen from 13 to 22 so far in 2026, totaling 53 incidents, yet only three tenancy terminations have been initiated for non-compliance. The charging rule is not included on annual apartment inspection forms or the "Five Alive" maintenance checks used when staff enter units. Citywide, e-bike battery fires reached 401 with six fatalities so far in 2026, up from 292 with one fatality last year, according to the Fire Department.

The roof of a water tower atop a building on Manhattan's Upper West Side was removed Thursday morning, exposing the nest of a rare family of barn owls believed to be the first documented nesting in Manhattan in modern history. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation police investigated and ordered the building owner to halt further demolition while probing potential violations of state and federal migratory bird protection laws. NYC Bird Alliance reported seeing one fledgling displaced from the nest and expressed concern that young owls without parental care may not survive. It remains unclear who owns the building or ordered the roof removal.

Residents and business owners held a press conference Thursday at 11th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan's East Village, urging city agencies to address ongoing e-bike congestion, blocked sidewalks, and sanitation issues on the block. The newly formed East Village Beautification Project said more than two years of complaints have not produced lasting solutions. A cleanup operation followed, with the Department of Sanitation removing a dozen abandoned bikes and police taking two additional bikes to the 9th Precinct. Organizers called for coordinated enforcement by NYPD, Sanitation, and elected officials, along with a long-term plan for delivery-bike parking.
