A 15-year-old student, Carlos Martinez, faces adult charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly stabbing another student during a fight at Miami Northwestern Senior High School on Aug. 31. The victim, who told detectives he did not know Martinez and was watching the altercation, suffered a puncture wound to his back requiring stitches. Surveillance video and an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office show Martinez pulling a blade-shaped object during the fight before fleeing; a knife with a 5-inch blade was recovered at the school. At Saturday's court appearance, Martinez's attorney claimed he acted in self-defense after being bullied and attacked by two other students, while stating charges will also be brought against those juveniles. The judge set bond at $6,150 and ordered house arrest.

The Justice Department warned local election officials in Miami-Dade and Broward counties about individuals posing as federal election monitors ahead of Election Day. Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Alina Garcia confirmed the warning but said no impostors have been reported at local polling places, and poll workers have undergone training to identify them. Real DOJ election monitors observe from outside polling sites, carry proper ID, and ensure compliance with Spanish/English language requirements under federal law. Earlier in October, a 46-year-old man was arrested for posing as an ICE agent while intimidating voters at a Brazilian election event at the college's Kendall campus.
