A 15-year-old student, Carlos Martinez, faces adult charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly stabbing another student during a fight at Miami Northwestern Senior High School on Aug. 31. The victim, who told detectives he did not know Martinez and was watching the altercation, suffered a puncture wound to his back requiring stitches. Surveillance video and an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office show Martinez pulling a blade-shaped object during the fight before fleeing; a knife with a 5-inch blade was recovered at the school. At Saturday's court appearance, Martinez's attorney claimed he acted in self-defense after being bullied and attacked by two other students, while stating charges will also be brought against those juveniles.
