Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has expressed opposition to Brightline's proposed $927 million commuter rail project, known as the Coastal Link. The mayor's office stated that the current tax-funded proposal fails to adequately protect taxpayers while providing service between Miami and Aventura. The plan aims to use existing tracks for street-level trains along U.S. 1, with stops in Wynwood, Little Haiti, and near FIU’s Biscayne Bay campus. City officials remain committed to negotiating a revised agreement that meets their standards.
Public Safety
King tide flooding was reported across multiple South Florida communities on Sunday, with salt water covering roads in Miami, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Hollywood Beach. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park near Key Biscayne experienced significant flooding, while businesses along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk laid out sandbags and boarded up storefronts. Cars were forced to slow through standing water at several locations, including Northeast 79th Street and North Bayshore Drive in Miami and roads near Dickens Avenue and 73rd Street in Miami Beach. The threat of additional flooding was expected to increase through Monday with whipping winds and downpours forecast during high tide windows.
