LA Fire Survivors to Lose Disaster Case Managers by End of October

Roughly 1,400 households affected by the January 2025 Los Angeles fires will lose their disaster case managers by the end of October as California and FEMA remain in a funding standoff. California requested $28 million for the program; FEMA awarded $13.2 million for 24 months but had made only one of four installment payments by August, leaving the state unable to sustain operations. FEMA later reimbursed outstanding payments but did not respond to a March request for an additional $6.5 million needed to cover the full period. Nonprofits including CORE are triaging cases and attempting to transfer clients to organizations funded by philanthropic dollars, while more than 100 case managers face job losses. Rep. Judy Chu, whose district includes Altadena, said failing to fund the program fully 'risks abandoning survivors.'

Trump Administration Sues California, LA County Over Alleged Non-Citizen Voter Registrations Ahead of Nov. 3 Election

The Trump administration filed a lawsuit Thursday against California and Los Angeles County seeking to prevent the counting of ballots from potentially 20,000 registered voters alleged to be non-citizens, just 19 days before the Nov. 3 general election. Federal prosecutors gave LA County Registrar Dean Logan and Secretary of State Shirley Weber 48 hours to verify citizenship on a USB drive list or sequester those ballots; Logan declined to review the file citing an insecure format. Grand jury subpoenas also targeted election officials in Orange County (Sept. 10, regarding ~18 voters) and San Diego County. Governor Newsom called the suit an attempt to suppress votes, noting the National Voter Registration Act bars purging voter rolls within 90 days of an election.
