The North Fork Mono Casino and Resort opened Tuesday afternoon off Highway 99 in Madera, California, featuring 2,400 slot machines and 40 gaming tables. Owned by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California and operated by Las Vegas-based Station Casinos, the property will run on a 24/7 schedule with a minimum age of 21 for gaming. The tribe's treasurer said the casino generates new revenues for social services for North Fork citizens as well as for the City and County of Madera under official agreements. A hotel, parking garage, entertainment center and conference center remain planned for the property. The opening follows decades of pursuit by the tribe and ongoing federal litigation from the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians, whose suit to halt operations remains pending before a federal judge.

The Bass Lake Ranger District plans to treat approximately 3,300 acres in the Sierra National Forest between October and early May, as announced by the Forest Service on Oct. 26. Project areas span Madera and Mariposa counties, with smoke potentially affecting North Fork, Ponderosa Basin, Jerseydale, Oakhurst, Fish Camp, Sugar Pine, Cedar Valley, Bass Lake, Ahwahnee and surrounding areas. Burning will occur during daytime conditions to limit visibility impacts, and the Forest Service will coordinate with Caltrans and local law enforcement on Highway 41 traffic. The agency emphasized that seeing smoke from these operations does not authorize residential debris burning, which CAL FIRE's Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit confirmed remains suspended as of its Oct. 21 notice.
