Local Politics · Lady Lake, FL
Lady Lake Commissioner Amanda McLea has placed a budget amendment on the Town Commission agenda for its 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19 meeting to cover the remaining $7,500 needed to save the town's annual Christmas parade. Town officials recently canceled the event citing fiscal responsibility, uncertainty around Amendment 3, and an estimated $15,000 personnel cost, after determining Parks Department events must now rely on fundraising rather than tax revenue. The American Legion has committed a $7,500 donation, but the parade still requires all available police officers plus public works and parks staff for road closures and traffic control. The commission will decide whether to fund the shortfall or pursue other options.
Social Events · Mount Dora, FL
The Mount Dora Boating Center & Marina will not hold its annual Christmas light display this holiday season, owner Joe Lewis and his family announced in a Facebook post last week. The display, which grew to more than 1 million lights over three decades, drew families to the Mount Dora waterfront each year. The family cited the desire to spend holidays together as their growing family's needs changed. Community members offered to volunteer, but the family said liability concerns and the display's specialized, undocumented electrical design make a handoff impractical.
