Deadly E-Bike Battery Fire at Bronx NYCHA Complex Highlights Rising Fires, Enforcement Gaps

A Monday fire at the Patterson Houses in the Bronx killed 11-year-old Zion Maine and critically injured four family members after a lithium-ion battery exploded while charging in the kitchen, blocking the exit. Since NYCHA's e-bike charging protocol took effect in 2024, battery fires inside authority properties have risen from 13 to 22 so far in 2026, totaling 53 incidents, yet only three tenancy terminations have been initiated for non-compliance. The charging rule is not included on annual apartment inspection forms or the "Five Alive" maintenance checks used when staff enter units. Citywide, e-bike battery fires reached 401 with six fatalities so far in 2026, up from 292 with one fatality last year, according to the Fire Department.

Brooklyn Artist Arrested Over Halloween Lynching Display

Aaron Mealy, a 35-year-old Black artist, was arrested Sunday for aggravated harassment after displaying a hanging figure with a noose and a sign referencing lynching on a city-owned tree outside his home on Herkimer Street near Buffalo Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Neighbors called police after finding the display, which Mealy said was intended to symbolize ongoing racial violence in the United States. The arrest cites a city law prohibiting nooses on property without the owner's consent; the tree belonged to the city. Mealy was released without bail and is being represented by the Legal Aid Society, which called the display political expression rather than harassment.
